Gardening in the Dark:
Hope & Transformation in Uncertain Times
June 6, 2020

"We cannot just be healed, we must be transformed."    Carrie Newcomer
During this time of covid-19 pandemic and social distancing, Carrie Newcomer will lead an online day retreat on the experience of living with uncertainty, finding hope and wisdom in our individual and community history and stories, and how these troubled times might be a moment for a new opening and transformation. Participants will explore: the difference between loneliness and life-giving solitude; honoring the very human feelings that arise in times of stress or uncertainty (such as a new awareness of vulnerability); and what holes in our society and personal lives have become apparent. Together we will share how we are finding joy in the power of the small moment and what we are all discovering in these troubled times. In this retreat we will explore a new creative envisioning of connection and community and how we can still be of valuable service, powerfully using our gifts within a social distancing context of “Three Feet or So.”

This will be a virtual retreat conducted on the Zoom platform (with security protections in place). Carrie will use music, poetry, creative writing, small and large group discussions to explore this timely topic.

Our Retreat Leader, Carrie Newcomer, is a performer, recording artist, and educator, described as a “prairie mystic” by the Boston Globe and one who “asks all the right questions” by Rolling Stone.  Carrie is the 2019 recipient of the Shalem Institute Contemplative Voices Award. Recent media appearances include PBS’s Religion and Ethics and Krista Tippett’s On Being.  Carrie has 17 nationally released albums and two companion books of poetry and essays. Newcomer’s first theatrical production, Betty’s Diner: The Musical, was performed at a sold out run at Purdue University in 2015 and is now available to interested theaters, universities, and spiritual communities.  She regularly works with Parker J.
